For generations, weaving has been the lifeline of hundreds of families in Macherla and its neighbouring villages.
Among them is a 55-year-old weaver who has spent over 30 years creating beautiful handwoven fabrics. But today, his hands can no longer move the way they used to. Years of continuous movement, using the entire body to operate the loom, have resulted in severe joint pain—forcing him to stop the very work that once fed his family.

His story is not his alone. It is the story of 100+ weaver families in this region.

A Community Struggling for Survival

  • 50 families have already migrated from Macherla to Puttapaka, leaving behind their homes and roots, just to find work.

  • Another 50 families continue to stay in Macherla, hoping conditions will improve.

  • In the neighbouring village of Tallapalli, 5–6 looms are lying silent due to lack of work.

  • Many skilled weavers, who once created beautiful sarees and fabrics, are now forced to work as daily-wage labourers.

Weaving is not just a profession—it is their identity, culture, and heritage. But today, it is becoming a burden threatening their very lives.

Long hours of physically exhausting work have reduced the life span of many weavers—from what should have been 100 years to barely 50 years, all because their bodies cannot handle the strain.
